Victors by 69 runs against Nigeria on Saturday, Neil MacRae’s side under performed with the bat on Sunday, despite 21-year-old Jonty Jenner scoring a second consecutive half century.
Jersey went into the game with the previous day’s highest ever T20I score tucked under their belt, 184/4, but chasing Canada’s 176/5 the Islanders fell away towards the end having been up with the required run-rate at the half-way stage.
Canada’s Nitish Kumar was in terrific form with the bat, on a field with a short boundary, as he notched up 50 runs off 25 balls before going on to score 83 off 35 deliveries including two boundaries and three 6s – for a strike-rate of 230.55.
Jersey coach MacRae said: ‘We did really well for the first ten overs of Canada’s innings by restricting them to 58 runs, but after that on a slowish ground and a flat wicket they came back into it.
‘But 175 to 180 was around a par score for the wicket and apart from Jonty who batted beautifully for his 50, we didn’t do ourselves justice with the bat.
‘It was an off-day with the bat after the previous day against Nigeria, we didn’t play our best cricket through the 40 overs, so we’ve got a day to recover and train before we play the UAE [tomorrow] on the same ground [as yesterday].
‘We’ve got to give Canada credit as they are a good side, they batted and bowled well.
‘We certainly batted with the right intent in taking the game to them, but ultimately we ran out of wickets so fell short.’
