Rugby: Siam Cup fitness race for Rae

The man replacing Steve Boden as forwards coach for next season suffered a doubly disappointing end to his professional career in the Championship on Saturday.

Having proudly led Jersey out against Yorkshire Carnegie, alongside his son Ellis (6), he sustained a hand injury early on and had to be replaced at half time in the record 34-0 Championship home defeat.

He said: ‘It’s sad really, in 12 years of pro rugby I’ve never broken a bone or had a dislocation, but now that’s two in a week. And as for the result, well I don’t want that to define our season. We’ve had a good campaign, but finished with a bit of a whimper in our last two games.

On the club’s finale to the season at Foote’s Lane on 7 May Rae said: ‘I’m sure everyone who can will want to play in the Siam now and try to finish on a high rather than a low. I’ll be dying to play, I just hope my hand lets me.’
