IT WAS yet another weekend filled with success for Jersey Spartan AC as the Island’s athletes took to the track in the Hampshire County Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

While some were after personal bests in their first county appearance, others were chasing silverware and NatWest Island Games qualification in Portsmouth, and there was even a Youth Commonwealth Games standard achieved by junior Sam Maher as he came agonisingly close to breaking the four minute mark in the under-17 boys’ 1,500 metres.

Having put behind them the flight delays of Friday night – which prevented some from competing on Saturday – the squad wasted no time in building their medal tally on day one, and records continued to tumble on Sunday as the likes of U13 starlets Lucy Woodward (long jump), Amelia Shenton (javelin) and Archie Barnes (high jump) all broke lifetime bests on their way to podium finishes. Barnes’s efforts in particular were impressive, with the youngster equalling the Hampshire county record of 1.50m as he finished second on countback.

Also in form was 16-year-old Maher, who dipped under the two minute mark in the 800m before storming to 1,500m gold in 4 min 01.28 sec – fast enough to be considered for Samoa 2015 – while senior Sam Dawkins made a long-awaited return after injury; clocking a new personal best time of 49.57 sec in the 400m heats before claiming silver in the final.

Elsewhere at the Mountbatten Centre, Stanley Livingston broke JSAC’s U20 men’s 110m hurdle record with a 14.76s run, Yuri Pereira put his name into the record books with a 46.35m throw in the hammer and Kamela Monks added herself to the selection pool for Team Jersey with medal-winning displays in the senior women’s 100m hurdles and triple jump.

Hampshire representation is a likely possibility for those stepping highest in the medal ceremonies, although there is, for the senior athletes at least, the small matter of a home Island Games to contend with first.
