Defendants claim they were ‘driven mad’ by businesses

In the first case, a St John resident, who was admitted to St Saviour’s Hospital, pleaded guilty to punching his neighbour six times and is due to be sentenced in five weeks.

In the second case, a man claimed he had been driven mad by sleepless nights caused by an air-conditioning unit owned by the insurance company Cherry Godfrey, which operates from the block of flats where he lives in Ingouville Lane.

In the St John case, which was against Robert Glywn Davies (64), of Grande Route de St Jean, the court ordered that both a background report and a psychiatric report be prepared after he admitted to an assault taking place at Beauchamp Farm.

Advocate David Steenson, defending, said that a guilty plea was submitted on the basis that Davies punched his neighbour no more than six times.

He added that his client had been ‘driven mad’ by his neighbour’s business and told the court that Davies had remained at St Saviour’s Hospital for a period of about two weeks after the incident.

Meanwhile, Michel Andre Jule (56), of Ingouville Lane, is facing two breaches of a restraining order preventing him from harassing anyone from Cherry Godfrey.

He also denies a charge of assault on a member of staff of the company that allegedly occurred in Ingouville Lane on 3 July.

He told the court: ‘I have been there 16 years and was there before Cherry Godfrey. I have been driven mad from sleepless nights caused by noise from the air-conditioning equipment.’

Advocate Lucy Marks, defending, asked for a four-week adjournment to allow time for Mr Jule’s psychiatrist to prepare an assessment.
