‘St Ouen, St Ouen, it happens at St Ouen’

But what? What happens? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that this song, and many others penned by 1970s cabaret star Bob Anthony, will be celebrated at this year’s Jersey Festival of Words.

The crooner is affectionately remembered for his 1975 album, Ile d’Amour, which has since developed cult status as a kitsch celebration of the time.

With songs such as ‘The Castle At Gorey (Tell Me Your Story)’, ‘(Let’s Go) Down (Down Down) to St Helier’, and the fantastically catchy ‘(It Happens At) St Ouen’, it’s clear the singer loved Jersey almost as much as he loved a bracket in a song title.

And the album – which evokes wonderful memories of the Island’s tourism heyday – will be remembered in the opening day of the festival, when acting troupe Plays Rough will perform a series of sketches at the Maritime Museum.
