Jet ski crash victim could return to Jersey this week

Giles Corbin (45) was told he may lose his leg after suffering multiple injuries, including a shattered knee, when the jet ski he was a passenger on was in collision with a speedboat in St Brelade’s Bay last month.

Mr Corbin, a partner at Mourant Ozannes, was initially transferred to Southampton Hospital but has since spent time in Salisbury District Hospital.

Writing on Facebook, where Mr Corbin has kept people updated on his progress, he said his left knee is still ‘three times normal size’ but two out of the three skin grafts on his leg were healing well.

He added that he managed to tackle 24 stairs on his crutches and cover 135 metres on the level.

Mr Corbin, a keen cyclist and endurance athlete, continued: ‘I think my recovery is going as well as can be expected given the extent of the initial damage.

‘As for flexibility I can move my ankle 10 degrees and my knee 20 degrees without assistance – 30 and 45 degrees respectively with physio assistance.

‘The knee needs to move 110 degrees apparently to cycle a bike. When we try to bend the knee beyond 45 degrees it feels as if the skin grafts around the knee will split.

‘The swelling in my left leg has massively reduced above and below the knee but the knee remains three time the normal size.

‘Alignment-wise the left knee points inwards when the leg is straight but hopefully as the knee swelling reduces the alignment will improve.’

Mr Corbin also thanked his family, friends, ‘school buddies’ and well-wishers for their ‘incredible support’.

‘I hope to be back in Jersey on Friday 11 August if I can get all the medical green lights to travel,’ he added.

The driver of the speedboat was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving and released on bail pending further inquiries.
