Father sentenced for smacking children

It was the second time in four years that the man has appeared in the Magistrate’s Court for physically abusing his children.

No details about the defendant can be given in order to protect the identity of the children.

In the latest case, the physical abuse against the youngest son started when he was aged six.

The court heard that it went on for two years until one of the boys reported it to school staff as he wanted it to stop.

The defendant admitted four charges of intentionally or recklessly causing harm to his two sons on two separate occasions.

The court heard that the defendant’s life ‘had fallen apart’ as his wife was now seeking a divorce and intends to take the boys to live permanently overseas.

In sentencing Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu said: ‘This was the second occasion in a relatively short period of time you have been in front of the court.

‘The second offence would normally mean a custodial sentence but because of what I have read in the social inquiry report and heard from your lawyer, I feel I can take an exceptional course of a non-custodial sentence.’
