Inter-island ferry prices revealed

Earlier this year it was announced that Condor was willing to run a dedicated inter-island service if both Jersey and Guernsey would invest in a trial this summer. The most likely boat would have been a 41-seater catermaran.

Although Jersey ministers had expressed interest, their Guernsey counterparts said they could not justify the investment.

Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham made the announcement about possible costs while responding to a question in the States.

He also said that he may propose using larger, more financially viable vessels on the route when negotiations for a trial start again next year.

‘We will start talking about this in earnest in September with Condor but in the meantime they are undertaking further research into the availability of suitable vessels,’ Senator Farnham said.

An interlude in the Jersey debate saw reference made to Guernsey Deputy Peter Ferbrache’s conversation with Senator Farnham on BBC Radio Guernsey last week.

Deputy Russell Labey said he wanted to thank ‘the minister for his openness on this’.

A further statement on the proposed inter-island service is due to be made in Guernsey’s States on Wednesday.
