Jersey’s asbestos buried – at a cost of £1 million

The project – which cost just over £1 million to complete – began at the start of the year and was undertaken by specialist contractors Rhodar on behalf of the Infrastructure Department.

A total of 290 containers were amassed between 1997, when storage at La Collette first started, and February 2016, when the containers ceased to be used and the specially packaged asbestos received at the site began to be sent straight for burial.

About 2,500 tonnes of asbestos has now been taken out of the containers and packaged before being buried in the cell.

The empty containers have been broken down for recycling.

Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel said: ‘This is quite a milestone for me as Infrastructure Minister and for the department. We have finally managed to get rid of the containers of asbestos which were such an eyesore for the last 20 years, and were not sustainable in the longer term.’
