States rates payment debate due next year

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft has regularly fought for the States to pay rates as his parish is home to the bulk of public buildings.

And his proposition calling on Treasury Minister Alan Maclean to bring forward legislative changes in 2018 was almost unanimously approved yesterday. Members still need to approve the law changes when they are brought to the Assembly next year, however.

In 2015 States Members supported in-principle proposals by Mr Crowcroft requesting the States pay rates on buildings across the Island – a move which would generate a total of £950,000 for the parishes each year.

However, the move was halted during last December’s Budget debate after a number of Members questioned the wording of the proposals and ultimately rejected the suggested changes to the Rates Law which would have enabled the States to start paying rates.

The proposition was approved by 38 votes to two. Trinity Constable Philip Le Sueur and Deputy Kevin Lewis voted against the proposition.
