States hospital funding debate: Fourth delay

Treasury Minister Alan Maclean made a statement during yesterday’s States sitting to withdraw the funding proposals, with fresh plans to be brought back for debate in the autumn.

The funding debate – which was initially meant to be scheduled in January – had already been delayed on three separate occasions before yesterday. Senator Maclean’s latest proposals include borrowing up to £275 million, with the rest of the funding coming from the Island’s Strategic Reserve, the rainy day fund.

However, Senator Maclean yesterday told Members that it was ‘sensible’ to withdraw the funding proposals and put the debate off until later this year. He added that some concerns had been raised by both ministerial colleagues and States backbenchers and that he ‘wanted to bring everyone with him’.

No firm timeline for the proposals to be re-lodged with the States have been put forward.
