Islander celebrates her 103rd birthday with glass of bubbly

Great-grandmother Georgette Dareau, née Marinel, celebrated her birthday at St Ewold’s Residential Home with a glass of champagne and a birthday cake.

Mrs Dareau, who is mother to Angela and Michel, said the secret to living so long was years of hard work in the hairdresser’s that she owned with her late husband, Jacques.

The Islander ran the salon, which was named after her husband and based in Halkett Place, during the Occupation and she said it was a very busy time of her life. She was left running the hairdresser’s when her husband – who was the last person to present the late-night news in French for Channel Television – was drafted into the French army.

Mrs Dareau is one of St Ewold’s oldest residents and has lived there since 2006.
