Murder inquiries extend to Portugal

And, with the inquiry now in its seventh week, the officer leading the case has said they are confident they will get justice for the 51-year-old mother of three, who was found dead in her home at 10 Victoria Street on 4 April.

A UK pathologist concluded that she had died as a result of ‘compression to the neck by a third party’.

Two weeks ago two officers from the States police travelled to northern Portugal and her home town near Viseu, where her mother still lives.

During the visit officers made inquiries with her family and learnt more about her background.

Mrs Rebelo moved to Jersey aged 39 and following her death Islanders helped to raise £4,000 to repatriate her body to her home town, where her funeral has now taken place.

Detective Inspector Steve Langford, who is the deputy senior investigating officer on the case, said the visit to Portugal had been a useful exercise.

‘It helped in terms of background information and family knowledge,’ he said.

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Fossey, the senior investigating officer, said: ‘We are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry and we have no reason to believe that there is any risk to the community or public of Jersey,’ she said.

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder and released on bail pending further inquiries.
