States reform – have your say

A sub panel of the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel is looking into the impact of proposed electoral changes that are due to debated by the States on 6 June.

The proposed changes, which have been put forward by the Privileges and Procedures Committee, seek to create six ‘super constituencies’ for the election of Deputies. That move was agreed in principle by the States in February but now needs to be brought back to the House for final approval. Two amendments to the draft law have also been lodged by Deputy Andrew Lewis which would alter the proposed districts and number of Members.

Sub-panel vice-chairman Deputy Kevin Lewis said: ‘The changes proposed will have a large impact on the electoral system. Whilst there has been plenty of discussion and debate surrounding electoral reform for many years, we feel that it is only right for us to speak to the public directly to understand their opinions and concerns before the States Assembly decides on a final course of action.’

The meetings, which will be held in each of the proposed new constituencies, are due to take place on: Tuesday 16 May at St Saviour’s Parish Hall at 7 pm; Wednesday 17 May at the Town Hall at 7 pm; Monday 22 May at Grouville Parish Hall at 7 pm; Tuesday 23 May at St John’s Parish Hall at 7 pm; Wednesday 24 May at St Ouen’s Parish Hall at 8 pm.
