Funnel clouds spotted over Jersey

Several of the mini twisters, which form at the base of clouds but do not touch the ground, were seen around the Island.

John Searson, principal meteorologist at the Jersey Met Office, said: ‘It is quite unusual to get funnel clouds at this time of the year.

‘The reason we have seen them today is that the air temperature is so much colder than the sea, which is currently 12c.

‘Because of this we get vigorous convection – air rising up through the atmosphere – and sometimes this can become organised and rise in spirals and form funnel clouds.’

He added: ‘Sometimes they develop and touch the sea and become waterspouts and sometimes they come onto the land and essentially become tornadoes.

‘They can cause a very small amount of damage – but are certainly nothing like what you would see in the US, for example.’
