States police distance themselves from officer’s ‘unfortunate’ Jersey Lifts comments

In recent weeks members of the unofficial group, who advertise lifts on Facebook, have become involved in disturbances in and around Liberation Station as they compete for customers.

It has also been claimed that some are racing back to the area after dropping off a customer to ensure they are first to the next fare.

In a Facebook post, the Jersey Taxi Drivers Association say Jersey Lifts drivers became involved in a fight at the weekend, leading to police being called.

When asked by a taxi marshal what the States police were going to do to crackdown on the Jersey Lifts drivers, the officer was recorded saying: ‘We know we are waiting for a couple of them to crash or a serious accident to happen before something can be done about it.’

The comments were recorded on the marshal’s body worn camera and were posted online. The video has since been taken down.

In a statement, the States police said: ‘We are aware of the video and its contents. The comments of the officer are unfortunate and we do not want to see anyone hurt on our roads, nor are we waiting for a crash to be able to tackle this issue.

‘The matter of Jersey Lifts is not straightforward and the States of Jersey Police and the Department for Infrastructure continue to be in dialogue on this subject.’
