Dead whale was the first to wash up in Jersey in 40 years

Members of the Société Jersiaise’s Marine Biology section have confirmed that the heavily decomposed carcass was that of a sperm whale, which are found across the globe, and added that it was even bigger than first estimated. Francis Binney said the animal was close to 18 metres long (60 ft) meaning it was a mature adult and will most likely have died of natural causes before washing up in Jersey.

Bones were removed from the whale’s right flipper and tested before the remains were taken by the Infrastructure Department to the animal carcass incinerator at Howard Davis Farm.
