Sentence could lead to girlfriend losing flat

The sentence meant that the man’s pregnant girlfriend lost the chance to move into a two-bedroom flat to be paid for through income support.

But Mr Harris said he had no other option, as it was the third time in three years that the defendant had appeared in court to admit breaches of community service orders.

The Assistant Magistrate decided that a 12-week sentence would be appropriate, as it would mean that he would be released from custody in good time before his girlfriend was due to give birth in July.

The 21-year-old who the court was told had been due to move into a two-bedroom flat with his girlfriend that day, admitted not complying with the terms of the community service order imposed in November last year when he was sentenced for his third offence of driving without insurance.
