Focus to intensify on technical and linguistic schooling

Since publishing its 2015 Business Plan, which set goals for the department over the following four years, the Island’s curriculum has been overhauled to incorporate more local geography, history and politics.

A UK-style Pupil Premium, which allocates financial support to schools to help children in households that receive Income Support or who are under the care of Social Services, has also been introduced.

A total of £1.6 million will be spent a year, and so far 2,357 pupils have been identified as eligible for the scheme, which was introduced Islandwide last month after a successful pilot scheme.

So far, new staff to support children with literacy and numeracy have been employed and current staff have been given extra training.

At a Business Plan update yesterday, chief education officer Justin Donovan listed some of the other goals the department was working towards.
