Major maritime emergency exercise starts today

The five-day drill will test the emergency services’ ability to deal with an incident at sea and will involve about 200 people across 40 organisations including the Fire and Rescue Service, the Ambulance Service and the States police.

Today, Harbour Master Captain Phil Buckley said that he did not want to disclose too much about the scenario, which will take place in and around the Harbour, until it unfolded. However, he did say that it was a ‘significant maritime incident that will test all aspects of emergency response’.

Mark James, chief fire and emergency planning officer who has spent 18 months organising the exercise, added: ‘From an emergency services point of view it is the first time we have ever tested the whole response in its entirety. Normally we test a specific plan and the exercise will last for an hour or two.’

During the drill the area around Elizabeth Harbour will be closed to the public, as it would be in a real scenario and no unauthorised access to the area will be permitted
