Thai murders: Appeals against convictions lost

Wai Phyo and Zaw Lin, both aged 22, were found guilty in December 2015 of killing the 24-year-old former Victoria College student and Hannah Witheridge (23), from Norfolk, on the Thai island of Koh Tao the previous year.

Mr Miller was repeatedly beaten over the head with a garden hoe on Sairee Beach and left to drown in shallow water. Miss Witheridge was beaten with the same weapon and raped.

According to the Bangkok-based news website Khaosod English, the Koh Samui Appeal Court this week upheld the convictions of the migrant workers. The two now face the death penalty.

The judgment apparently came as a surprise to the two men’s lawyers, who said that they had been given no notification that the ruling was due to be made.
