Gerard Eamon Maguire (49) allegedly attacked his friend of seven years while the pair were drinking at the victim’s flat in Journeaux Court in the early hours of 30 October last year. The blade broke off inside 63-year-old Shaun Patrick Howard’s neck, the court heard.
The jury of six men and six women heard yesterday that if it were not for the swift action of neighbours who applied pressure to the ‘profusely bleeding’ wound then Mr Howard would have died.
They were told that he lost a litre of blood and had defibrillator pads applied to his chest ‘when his eyes closed and he stopped talking’ in an ambulance.
Mr Maguire denies attempted murder, grave and criminal assault and perverting the course of justice.
