Pupil premium ‘will help close achievement gap’

Jersey Premium funding became available to States primary and secondary schools in January after a pilot phase of the scheme was introduced in 19 schools last year.

A report released yesterday revealed that just 29.3 per cent of GCSE students who would have been eligible to receive pupil premium funding gained five or more GCSEs including the core subjects of English and maths at grades A* to C. That compares to 66.7 per cent for other pupils.

However, Justin Donovan, chief officer for Education, believes that the pupil premium scheme – introduced in January – will help close that gap.

The scheme provides financial support to children who live in a household that receives Income Support or who are under the care of Social Services.
