Off for a paddle… 4,500 miles across the Atlantic

Chris Bertish, who used to work for the Jersey Surf School, is almost two months into his epic trip, which started on the beaches of Agadir in Morocco and is due to finish in Florida.

He has battled against huge Atlantic swells, has been woken in the night by large pods of dolphins and whales and has been kept company by turtles and jellyfish.

South African Mr Bertish spent Christmas Day paddling past the

Canary Islands and New Year sipping from a bio-degradable bottle of malt whisky in the middle of the ocean.

He has spent 50 of his planned 120 days at sea on his custom-built six-metre craft TheImpiFish, and is currently paddling the equivalent of a 26-mile marathon for 12 to 15 hours every day as well as preparing freeze-dried food and documenting his trip, which has so far raised a mammoth £300,000.

The money will go to three charities which support children in Africa through education, medical care and the building of up to five schools.
