Now he believes he has a solution which could save thousands of lives.
Mr Newman, who founded the charity Hands Off, which has campaigned in Jersey and the UK to stop phone use behind the wheel, is now championing new technology which can suppress calls and texts to a driver’s phone when their car’s ignition is on.
The technology, which is currently available in the USA, is now being developed for use in Europe.
Mr Newman said: ‘This is a major public issue that is killing and injuring thousands of people. But now we have a cure.’
