Health to keep eye on drug studies

The drug, known as pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP, has been described as a ‘game-changer’ by experts to help prevent HIV transmission.

The NHS is due to launch a three-year trial with the drug in England next year.

It will involve 10,000 people and it is hoped it will pave the way for a national roll-out. Advocates of the drug say it saves lives and money and has the power to prevent transmission.

Dr Ivan Muscat, the Island’s consultant microbiologist, said a decision on the drug locally would not be made until after the trial had been completed.
