Minimum wage rise to £9 could ‘finish’ farming

Peter Le Maistre said that with low profit margins on many produce lines, increasing wages for seasonal farm workers even by a small amount could make growing some crops unviable.

Last month the States agreed to increase the minimum wage from £6.97 per hour to £7.18.

Mr Le Maistre, who was elected unopposed as the president of the Jersey Farmers Union last week, said that by the time social security payments and holiday pay are added employers are paying more than the basic rate rate.

He added that if the wage rose to £9 an hour there was a risk that the farming industry in Jersey would finish as it would make it impossible to compete with UK farmers.
