Foster carer scarcity: More children may be sent to UK

Jemma Morrison, a senior social worker at Fostering and Adoption Jersey – part of the Health and Social Services team – said that although the situation is not yet critical, it could worsen if the shortage of foster carers in the Island is not addressed.

Currently there are 47 registered foster carers in Jersey and 15 of them are friends or family of the children in care. That leaves 32 carers – both full and part-time – who look after 25 children.

Mrs Morrison said that having to put children into foster homes in the UK in situations when they are best off staying in Jersey, could have a detrimental effect on their wellbeing.
