Benefit cuts lead to a rise in food bank use

The review, published by Housing Minister Anne Pryke, showed that 180 people visited the Island’s three main food banks, run by the Grace Trust, St Helier Methodist Centre and the St Vincent de Paul Society, in the first quarter of this year.

Of the 170 people who took part in a survey for the report, 60 per cent were male and 55 per cent were born in Jersey.

The majority of people accessing the charities were aged between 35 and 54.

The data showed that 29 per cent of the people surveyed said that they used food banks because a long-term health condition prevented them from working, and 26 per cent said it was due to a reduction in benefits.
