Ross Savage, who worked on terrorist investigations for the Met Police and the UK Ministry of Defence between 2010 and 2015, says that Jersey’s more than 13,000-strong finance workforce must understand that the information to which have access can play a key role in counter-terrorism investigations.
Addressing hundreds of finance workers at a Jersey International Business School conference on economic crime, the former detective said that up to 90 per cent of information on the 9/11 hijackers came from financial institutions.
He told the JEP that Islamic State had grown so sophisticated and wealthy that their finances have to pass through the regulated sector. And although he said there was no evidence of IS money coming into contact with Jersey businesses, he stressed it did not mean that it was not happening or would not happen in the future.
