Explosive chemicals are stored safely in schools

But the Education Department have stressed that States police officers and Fire and Rescue Service staff have inspected the sites which store the chemical and have deemed them to be safe.

Over the past week around a dozen schools in the UK have had to call in bomb squads to conduct controlled explosions to destroy provisions of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine.

A spokeswoman for the Education Department said authorities were satisfied with how the chemical had been stored in Island schools.

She said: ‘Earlier this week we were advised by Mark James, Jersey’s emergency planning officer and chief fire officer, about the problems in the UK.

‘Four of our schools use this chemical and we can confirm that they are all following best practice and storing it correctly in a safe, secure way. As a result we do not have any concerns.’
