Projected population by 2035 could be 140,400

In June it was revealed that net migration – the number of people arriving in Jersey above the number that has left – soared to 1,500 last year – the highest level since the States Statistics Unit started annual records in 2001. At the time ministers said that increased levels of immigration could be expected to continue in order to provide more support for businesses benefiting the economy.

And today a new report projecting what the Island’s population could be under a number of scenarios shows that should 1,500 new people keep arriving in the Island annually, then by 2035 the population would stand at 140,400 – a 37 per cent increase on last year’s estimated population.

The Assistant Chief Minister with responsibility for population, Senator Paul Routier, has, however, said that such a scenario would be unrealistic and not one ministers would be ‘happy with’.
