Repeat offender jailed after threat with knife

The 35-year-old of no fixed address, admitted a charge of grave and criminal assault as well as two counts of theft from stores in King Street.

When sentenced, the defendant was told by Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris that he should ‘not think of prison as home’, to which he retorted that he ‘had not had a home in three years and it was better than living on the streets’.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that on 11 September the accused went into the Mountain Warehouse store and tried on some boots.

Later it was revealed that the defendant had stolen a penknife and five torches from the shop as well as a jacket.

He then went to the Jack Wills shop and stole a bag.
