Hundreds sign up to help primary pupils with reading

About 200 people have so far signed up to take part in the scheme, which was launched yesterday by the charity Every Child Our Future.

The charity says it will also fund specialist teachers and teaching assistants to work with children individually.

According to latest figures, around 20 per cent of Jersey pupils in non-fee-paying schools aged between five and seven fail to achieve their age-related standards in reading. In England this figure is about ten per cent.

Nick Kershaw, co-founder of Every Child Our Future, said: ‘This is a chance to ensure that all Jersey’s children, regardless of background, can overcome their difficulties and have the same opportunities to succeed.’
