Islanders awaiting news as Italy death toll rises

JERSEY’S Italian community were awaiting further news from central Italy following a devastating earthquake that has left dozens dead.

The magnitude 6.2 quake struck at 1.36 am yesterday, 65 miles north east of Rome.

Pictures of flattened villages in rural areas emerged yesterday as rescue operations got under way.

The epicentre was in Norcia, near Perugia, in mountainous central Italy, but tremors were felt as far away as Rome.
