RNLI warning after three rescued from sea in west

The two girls got caught in a big swell at about 9.30 am on Tuesday – before the beach lifeguards were on duty – and were being battered against the sea wall close to the Watersplash.

Although a third girl who was with the teenagers managed to get herself to safety, a man who jumped in to try to help the pair also got into trouble and needed to be pulled from the water by rescuers.

He along with one of the teenage girls were picked up by RNLI lifeguard Alex Vibert and off-duty lifeguard Chantelle Cootes and were paddled to the nearest safety point more than 1 km away. The second teen was rescued by Lawrence Chay, the assistant general manager of the Watersplash, who took her to the slip near Big Vern’s on a rescue board. They all escaped with minor injuries.
