Rescued seal pup flown to the UK for treatment

The female common seal, also known as a harbour seal, is aged between two and four weeks old and has been named Rhonda by those who cared for her in Jersey after the place where she was found.

On Thursday she was flown to Bristol free of charge on board a Blue Islands flight and will now be looked after at the Mallydams RSPCA centre, which is dealing with a number of other seals like her who are also suffering from extreme mouth ulcers.

Donna de Gruchy, of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said the seal, whose presence in Jersey waters was unusual, was doing better than expected, and had put on weight before leaving Jersey.
