Neighbours in the area called the emergency services at 7 pm after seeing smoke coming from a dormer window at the property and hearing a fire alarm.
Three people, who knew the victim had returned home, attempted a rescue, and although they managed to move him out of the kitchen away from the fire, they were overcome by fumes before they could get him out of the property completely.
Four firefighters, who arrived as the rescue party emerged from the flat, lifted the man – who is thought to be in his 40s or 50s – to safety and administered first aid at the scene.
