Abuse probe ‘putting off childcare staff’

The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry was launched in 2014 to hear evidence of child abuse in Jersey care homes dating back to the end of the Second World War.

Health Minister Andrew Green said that while the inquiry is ‘completely necessary’, some of the revelations were affecting the ability of Children’s Services to recruit.

Three new permanent directors have been appointed by the department along with 20 social workers, many of whom are only on temporary contracts. The department still requires another director and a number of permanent social workers.

The inquiry is due to release its report later this year.
