Mr Gainsborough Roberts was chosen by the public as the subject of the 2016 People’s Portrait after spending the last 20 years sharing his collection of memorabilia with the community.
‘Jersey has given me the biggest honour I have ever had in my life. If someone had given me the choice of becoming a Lord or a Knight, or being chosen by the people of Jersey to have my portrait painted, this is exactly what I would have chosen,’ he said.
Mr Gainsborough Roberts built up his collection since childhood, assembling hundreds of items that define popular culture and key events from the 20th century.
