Peter Thomson, who entered the inaugural race in 1967 when he was 19, and again the following year, had a heart attack several years ago.
However, he has received clearance from his doctor to take part in the 50th edition of the race which is due to take place on Saturday, and he is confident he can finish it.
Mr Thomson said: ‘Entering the event 50 years on is probably a bit mad. It does feel a bit like unfinished business because I didn’t complete the race in 1967 and 1968.
