A century of remembering the Jerseymen at Jutland

The battle brought together the British and German navies – the two most powerful naval forces of the time – on 31 May and 1 June 1916 in horrendous conditions off the coast of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula and by battle’s end, 8,500 British and German personnel had lost their lives. Of the 134 Jerseymen who fought in the battle, 27 were killed.

The Bailiff, William Bailhache, is due to represent the Island at Tuesday’s service of commemoration at St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall on Orkney in the presence of Prince Philip.

Military historian and author Ned Malet de Carteret, whose great-uncle Midshipman Philip Malet de Carteret died on HMS Queen Mary, is also attending the commemorations.
