In an open letter published on Tuesday discussing the impact on Jersey of 23 June’s ‘Brexit’ referendum, Senator Philip Bailhache says that the Island would not be immune to any of the likely ‘recriminations and turmoil’ of a vote to leave.
But he also says that Jersey should be confident about its economic future whatever the outcome of next month’s historic vote, adding that while the result of the referendum will have an impact on Jersey, it is not part of the UK or the EU so Islanders should not, despite what some have suggested, be entitled to vote.
In his letter, Senator Bailhache says that a key concern for the Island if the UK leaves the EU would be the loss of its trade agreements through ‘Protocol 3’ of the UK’s Act of Accession, which was signed in 1972 before its entry into the European Community.
