New course to tackle ‘chronic shortage’ of veterinary nurses

Major Stephen Coleman, the JSPCA chief executive, says there are not enough veterinary nurses in the Island and most have to be recruited from the UK.

Mr Coleman said because there are so few qualified veterinary nurses from the Island, vets have to turn to the UK to recruit – which can take a long time.

He said he hoped that the launch of a new full-time course in animal management will in future go some way to alleviating the problem. The level three sixth-form course, which is a joint venture between Highlands College and the JSPCA, starts in September.
