States can’t afford Fort masterplan

More than two decades after the first plan was put forward to revitalise the site – once a major tourist hotspot and leisure venue for Islanders – Constable Steve Pallett has conceded that given the Island’s predicted £145 million financial deficit there will be no public funding for Fort Regent any time soon.

Instead, he says that private companies will be required to invest in the redevelopment of Fort Regent.

More than 18 months ago radical plans – the fifth stragey published in the last two decades – were released outlining an overhaul of the facility, which included a state-of-the-art glass-floored ‘skyway’ platform, 120-bed hotel and lift access from Snow Hill, however, following the release of the plans the extent of the Island’s financial blackhole was revealed and no funding for the project was secured in the Medium Term Financial Plan, which sets States spending for four years at a time.
