States back down over plans to make all taxis wheelchair accessible

Following weeks of discussions about the proposals and a backlash from the industry, which included a strike in December when up to 100 cars circled around St Helier in protest, causing mile-long tailbacks, Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel has confirmed that the number of wheelchair access vehicles that will be required is being re-negotiated.

And he said that instead of all rank vehicles needing to be wheelchair accessible, instead between 15 and 20 per cent of both rank and private hire vehicles would be.

However, it was also agreed, he added, that all vehicles should have increased accessibility for the disabled, including grab handles and special cushions that swivel to allow easy access.
