Red tape ends epic journey on the world’s longest road

Islander Ben Bree’s epic drive from Chile to northern Alaska on the longest road in the world looks to have been scuppered, agonisingly close to the finishing line.

The 34-year-old former Les Quennevais and Highlands College student has had his US tourist visa rejected with only 1,000 miles still to complete – and he has even received marriage proposals from Americans wanting to help him return and complete his journey.

The self-confessed ‘serial traveller’ started his journey in 2012 after buying the 1960s-style van in Santiago, Chile, and, offering fellow-minded travellers the chance to join him on his adventure, he has spent the last four years driving the van up the Pan-American Highway in a bid to reach Prudhoe Bay – one of the most northern towns in Alaska.
