World’s dairy farmers to celebrate herd book

On 3 March 1866 the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society (RJAHS) made the first entries to the Jersey Herd Book, which is the oldest dairy breed record in the world.

Since then details of every cow born in the Island, including its ancestry, have been added to this bovine registry, guaranteeing the purity of breeding that makes the Jersey unique among cattle.

The RJAHS is planning to mark the date by planting an avenue of 28 trees, 14 on each side of the drive to the Royal Trinity Showground and a book detailing the history of the Jersey cow in its Island home will be published in June to coincide with the visit by the World Jersey Cattle Bureau members.
