Minister says he cannot rule out new hospital tax

A day after Health Minister Andrew Green pledged to take the public’s choice of site for a new hospital to the States as the preferred option, Senator Alan Maclean has revealed how he plans to pay for the project – saying he wants to avoid burdening Islanders if at all possible.

But he has warned that if redeveloping the Hospital is chosen – which is the most expensive option by almost £200 million – then that may not be possible. ‘If that were the chosen option then it would be possible – I couldn’t rule it out – that we might need to look at some form of charge. Or if any delay is too great and the situation changes with the bond market,’ he said.

It comes as the opposition to building on the People’s Park intensifies, with campaigners claiming that ministers are ‘biased’ and are trying to steer Islanders towards favouring a decision to develop the site, which is the cheapest option on the shortlist.
