Dogs must carry their owners’ phone number

The States voted heavily in favour of updating the Dogs (Jersey) Law 1961, with changes also including new powers to seize and detain dogs that are ‘dangerously out of control’, increased penalties for certain dog offences, allowing the Constables to determine the dog licence fee and giving Centeniers the power to issue fines for lesser offences.

Outlining the Chief Minister’s proposition to update the law, External Relations Minister Sir Philip Bailhache said that there had been ‘very little change’ to Jersey’s dog laws since they were introduced.

Under the new laws, which are expected to come into force in the coming weeks, officers will be able to seize dogs in cases where they have reasonable cause to believe that they are out of control in a public place.
